I thought the phrase was 2-minute hate... I think I remember where 1984 is on the bookshelves. I'll have to check.

You may or may not find this site helpful

http://www.geocities.com/smcameron/linux-audio-notes.html
It is my site, detailing my adventures with linux midi stuff... I am perusing blogger.com in the thought of moving that here, in case I'm missing out on useful comments with my current approach (blog as traditional (circa 1994) web page.)

It troubles me that your midi keyboard doesn't show up in aconnect output... but then you say you get some output from the /dev/midi files, so maybe it's fine. If you're keyboard has a regular midi cable output (as opposed to just USB) then I can vouch for the M-audio Midisport 2x2 as a working USB to MIDI converter. Well, with 2.6.x kernels. The /dev/midi* you mentions sounds 2.4-ish.

In case you wonder if the soundfonts are working with your soundcard correctly (a problem I have not yet solved) you might try as an alternative a softsynth (e.g. fluidsynth -- google it) and load the soundfont into the softsynth. That takes your hardware wavetable out of the equation -- or at least offers you an alternate path. I've successfully used soundfonts with a softsynth where I have failed using hardware wavetables.

Good luck, fellow linux-midi-person.
